Understanding Waste Oil Recycling

When you handle services like your own oil changes for cars, boats or equipment you will need to find a disposal site. The disposal sites are for the waste oil to be handled safely and sent to recycling if it is eligible. This is a process that most people are aware of but do not understand about waste oil disposal. Here are a few key points you should know and understand about waste oil recycling.

Oil Eligibility

The first thing you need to understand about waste oil recycling is which oils can be refined or recycled. Most motor oils can be recycled if they are disposed of at proper disposal sites. The oil can be either distilled or combusted to create a new use for the oil. Combustion will burn the oil. Distilling the oil will remove the impurities, but the resulting recycled oil is used for different applications than combustion-recycled options.

Oil Uses

You may wonder what types of uses recycled oil has after the waste oil reaches the disposal. If the waste oil is recycled through combustion, it will be used in furnaces, industrial heating systems, and residential space heaters. If you live in a cold environment, then you may be able to find an oil recycling centre that offers discounted recycled space heater oil. This can save you money while allowing you to recycle your waste oil as well. If the oil is distilled, it will go to marine fuel uses.

Oil Residue

Every waste oil has a residue or sludge. The misconception is that the sludge can not be recycled and must be disposed of. The truth is that it can be recycled. The sludge or residue is known as REOB and can be used in asphalt work. Many contractors will choose an REOB asphalt mixture to help reduce costs and provide a suitable driveway option to their customers.

If you aren't sure if the waste oil you have is eligible for recycling, contact your local disposal service. They can let you know if it is, if there is a special drop off point for the oil and what you need to do if you would like your waste oil recycled. Keep in mind, some of the disposal sites have recycling programs where you can drop off waste oil and pick up recycled oil to help the environment and cut your oil costs.
